Raising Awareness of How Medications Affect Case Conditions

Medications are created to improve the quality of life and health of individuals. They treat and manage many conditions. Either directly, or indirectly, medications alter blood pressure, control seizure disorders, improve appetite, decrease pain, and have countless other uses.

Certain classes of medications may prove to be a potential modifier in a client’s case. A legal nurse consultant can provide valuable insight to an attorney and their client on medications, chiefly pre-existing, and their potential impact on a case.

Severity of Symptoms – Lessons from Research

A client has a past medical history of back pain. After a motor vehicle accident, a reported complaint as a result of the accident is back pain. Where does the preexisting condition and the new injury begin and end?

Did the client take any medication for the condition in the past? Have they required any new procedures? Does the client’s prior medical documentation and the post event documentation reflect a change in severity grading? Please note that a legal nurse consultant is best suited to examine the depth of the situation, however, this tool can provide insight into examining severity of symptoms.

LEGAL NURSE CONSULTANT FAQ

Why do attorneys need Legal Nurse Consultants?

An attorney may need LNC services in cases such as medical malpractice, personal injury, long-term care, toxic tort, product liability, workplace injury, nursing home negligence and any case where a health-related

complication exists.

When should you contact a Legal Nurse Consultant?

In cases where there is a higher level of complexity in the case or there is a unique element to the case or variation from the norm. A case that needs more specific medical knowledge of both positive and negatives implications is a specialty of LNC’s.

How much does it cost to hire a Legal Nurse Consultant?

We work on an hourly rate with a service retainer, starting at $75.00 per hour, and may increase for services categorized within the expert witness role. A lower subscription rate may be available for a monthly recurring service agreement.

Why hire a Legal Nurse Consultant instead of a medical doctor?

A legal nurse consultant has the ability to provide services that are generally more time intensive such as chronology reports and organization of lengthy medical records. The LNC is a cost-effective approach to having strengths and weaknesses of a medical-legal case evaluated.
